About 15 years ago, the United States had a bill outlawing the possession of assault weapons. This bill was due to expire soon. The House of Representatives needed to vote to have the bill continue in force. The speaker of the House was Dennis Hastert. The House was controlled by a majority of Republicans. Even though the Democrats in the House wanted to vote on the continuation of the bill, Hastert refused to allow a vote. The bill was allowed to die.
The United States has had more than 250 mass shootings this year. Many were committed with assault weapons. Hundreds of people were killed. Many would not have been killed if there were no assault weapons. Why have none of the Republicans stepped forward and assumed some blame for their actions?
Rep. Adam Kinzinger has stated (not voted), that he favors universal background checks, banning large magazines, raising the legal age for purchasing assault weapons and “red flag” laws. Rep. Kinzinger owns an AR-style weapon. Why do none state “I’m sorry.” or “I voted wrong.” Or is it always, “I don’t have to vote and declare my position.” That is not enough. Rep. Kinzinger, we are waiting for action not words.
