ROCKFORD — Police are investigating two killings that happened within two days, and they are asking for the public’s help solving both homicides.

The latest fatal shooting happened just before 7:30 p.m. Monday in the 1100 block of Benton Street. Friends drove a 39-year-old Rockford man who had been shot to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Police Chief Dan O’Shea said at the scene.

No suspects have been identified as of Tuesday.

This is the fifth homicide in the city this year and the second deadly shooting since Sunday. Before Sunday there had not been a killing since April 2.

The two shootings don’t appear to be related, but it is still early in the investigation, O’Shea said. He asked the public to call police or Rockford Area Crime Stoppers if they have any information on the killings.

On Sunday, a 24-year-old man was fatally shot at a house party in the 1400 block of Jefferson Street.

O’Shea said there did not appear to be a large gathering before Monday’s fatal shooting.

The victim "was here with what appears to be friends or family prior to the shooting," O’Shea said.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the Rockford Police Department at 815-966-2900 or Crime Stoppers at 815-963-7867.
