Upton Sinclair’s "The Jungle" is being played out in the meat-packing plants throughout the U.S. The Trump executive order to keep meat-packing plants open is a death certificate to thousands of workers.
Workers’ safety is being jeopardized by a binary choice of either breaking the food chain or putting workers lives on the line. The Trump Administration keeps making the mistake of the tyranny of "either/or" rather than the genius of "both/and."
Here is the "both/and option":
1. Temporarily close plants and conduct extensive testing for the virus on everyone connected to the plant.
2. While the plant is closed disinfect and refit it to safely accommodate workers.
3. Re-open upgraded plants that comply with new mandatory regulations from the CDS and OSHA.
4. Monitor plants to see that they continue to comply.
Only a short disruption in the food chain followed by the ability to keep the food chain going while safely protecting the lives of workers.
History will record this as a 21st-century atrocity if our nation does not stand up for the lives of these essential workers.
