Two people were killed in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday on Interstate 90 in northern Winnebago County, Coroner Bill Hintz said.

Police responded shortly before 2 a.m. to a crash in the westbound lanes of the tollway near the Rockton Road tollbooth.

"The vehicle left the roadway, struck a light pole and overturned twice," Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Brian McKinney said. "The driver and a front-seat passenger were ejected from the vehicle and a back seat passenger was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries."

A 28-year-old Chicago man and a 27-year-old man from Rockford were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their names won’t be released until their families are notified.

It’s unclear who was driving the vehicle, described as a 2009 Dodge Journey, McKinney said.

Autopsies are planned for Monday. Toxicology test results will be available in about three weeks.
