The Kiwanis Club of Rockford exists to serve the children and youth of this area. Therefore, even COVID-19 could not stop the organization from recognizing five local high school seniors as their 2020 Higher Education Grants recipients. The seniors previously had their graduation ceremonies, proms and other spring events canceled, and the club was determined not to add the education grants recognition event to that list. So, at noon on April 21, online on Zoom, the event happened as originally planned with many club members and all five recipients and their families in attendance.

Despite his busy schedule, Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara kept his previous commitment and was online to deliver an inspiring message to the seniors. This year’s Higher Education Grant winners are Erika De La Mora (Jefferson), Madison Griffith (Hononegah), Hope Markley (Hononegah), Kylee Semenchuk (Harlem) and Kristen Zuzga (Auburn). During these uncertain times, the Kiwanis Club of Rockford continues to meet on Zoom, so that we can keep making a difference in our community. Phil Davidson, President, Kiwanis Club of Rockford.
