ROCKFORD — A Union Pacific freight train slipped off its tracks in downtown Monday afternoon, crumbling parts of the pavement beneath it and getting stuck in the roadway.

The train derailed and remained upright on a stretch of tracks just south of YMCA of Rock River Valley on Madison Street. No one was injured.

The train was traveling just a few miles per hour when it left the tracks. The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
