ROCKFORD — The Rockford Area Arts Council, in partnership with the Rockford Public Library and the city of Rockford, has established a Poet Laureate and youth Poet Laureate position.


The official honor is awarded for a period of two years and is a grant-funded position. The Arts Council and the Rockford Public Library will provide the laureates with the programming and resources needed to promote their personal work, host workshops for residents and appear at city events.


Residents can nominate someone for the role or apply themselves. The poet must be a resident in the Rockford area who has a minimum of one year of residency. Those ages 18 or older may apply for the Poet Laureate award, and those ages 13 - 17 may apply to the Youth Laureate award. The chosen applicants will have demonstrated previous commitment to poetry and have significant publication history.
