ROCKFORD — Casey's General Store is now in Rockford.

The gasoline and convenience store, located at South Mulford Road and Harrison Avenue, welcomed customers with a soft opening on Aug. 8 and will host its grand opening Friday and Saturday.

Casey's, long known for its tidy premises and freshly made pizzas and caked donuts, has operated in mostly rural communities of 5,000 people or less selling gasoline and a variety of snack foods and convenience items.

That business model has worked for years and allowed the Ankey, Iowa-based chain to grow to the tune of more than 2,000 stores throughout the Midwest including several stores in nearby communities such as Roscoe, Rockton, Loves Park, Machesney Park and Belvidere.

Nubia Bohms, Casey's area supervisor, said the chain is now looking to increase its Midwest presence.

"We are starting to expand into bigger towns and cities," she said. "We want to change with the times."

Bohm said the Rockford store is already a part of city's chamber of commerce, and said the reception by residents here has been overwhelmingly positive.

"We're busy and we're very excited to be the new kid on the block," she said.

Hours are 5 a.m. to midnight.
