SOUTH BELOIT — Cornerstone Credit Union’s new branch at 640 Blackhawk Bvd. was a long time in the making, Branch Manager Barbi Ortiz said.

The credit union bought the building four years ago and began transforming it into a new branch last spring because its Clark Street location was in a residential area.

The new branch opened in September for its approximately 1,500 customers.

“It is a state-of-the-art facility,” Ortiz said. “We have an area for members to plug in their electronics, sit and read the local newspaper and have a cup of coffee.”

The building once housed a BMO Harris Bank. The credit union’s latest branch includes three private offices.

This is the credit union’s fourth location. Its main office is in Freeport. Other branches are in Sterling and Milledgeville.

Cornerstone Credit Union has closed the Clark Street location, and the credit union is hoping to sell the building
