FREEPORT — Aly Seiple and her sister Cari Hauch, both of Lena, got a jump start on burning off their Thanksgiving Day meals by joining more than 80 runners for the annual Turkey Trot 5K run Thursday morning at the YMCA of Northwest Illinois.
“My sister and I love this run, and what a great way to burst some calories before we sit down to eat,” Seiple said. “The run is fun, and it is a great way to help others who may not have a meal on this holiday.”
Price of participation for the run was non-perishable food items or a monetary donation to the Freeport Area Church Cooperative (FACC).
As barrels began to fill with food items, many of the runners stretched their legs in preparation for the race.
Christine Hoyle, health and wellness director at the YMCA, said more runners signed up this year.
“This Turkey Trot has been a popular event for more than five years, and to see more people join in for the cause this year makes it special,” Hoyle said. “This is a great event to get some exercise in before you sit down with your family later in the day.”
